Yves KLEIN: Yves Peintures. 10 planches en couleurs. Préface de Claude Pascal. 1954.

KLEIN Yves YVES Peintures 1954

Artist book.
Front cover as title page; 1 plate, frontsipice; 3 pages "Preface" by Pascal Claude, only constitued of black lines, in text-like shape, forming four paragraphs; 9 different monochrome plates; 1 colophon page. Wrappers. In-8°. Self-published. Edition of 150 copies which very probably have not all actually been made.
Two handwritten and signed dedications to a couple of his friends in black pencil, one on the front cover, underligned with a wide line a blue pastel, the second one inside the back cover, underligned with a wide line of yellow pastel, protected with two transparent scotch tape pieces (5 cm). (Y.K. was very often using pastels at this period and it could be said these two pastels, blue and yellow, are original works). Plates are monochromes of various colors, made of canvaslike shape pieces of printed paper in one color, mounted on the plate, on which the size of each of the canvases they are supposed to reproduce is handwritten in black pencil by Y. Klein. On each of the plates (except the frontispice one), are printed "Yves", the place and date of the supposed realization of the monochrome "canvases". Four of the plates are signed (printed) "Yves" in the "canvases".
This book has been given by Klein as the catalogue of the monochrome canvases he would have painted before, which is not the case. It is not a catalogue, nor a book, nor a manifesto. It is an artistic gesture. Essential, fundamental to contemporary art.
Wember/Klein, p. 142, see #161.
