MTL was founded in 1970 in Brussels by Fernand Spillemaekers,
theorician, visual artist, Romanist, art critic.
Most of the important artists of this period such as Sol LeWitt,
Gilberto Zorio, Daniel Buren, André Cadere, Marcel Broodthaers,
Jan Dibbets, Mel Bochner, Joseph Kosuth ou encore Guy Mees, Hanne
Darboven, John Baldessari and Robert Ryman. exhibited in the
gallery.

When
Fernand Spillemaeckers, owner and founder of MTL Gallery in Brussels,
died in 1978, Jan Dibbets asked the above artists who had exhibited
in this gallery to create a piece in homage to him.
